James Freeman (Galerist) Interview

We are joined by James Freeman, founder of the James Freeman Gallery in Islington, London. Known for championing contemporary approaches to historicism, James curates exhibitions that weave myth, aura, and history into urgent conversations for today.

We first met James in May, when Maison Douce travelled to London for Slipping the Veil, the exhibition he co-curated with Elena Unger at St Bartholomew the Great. In this extraordinary setting—a 900-year-old church—the building itself became a collaborator, transforming the encounter between art, space, and audience.

In our conversation, we talk about:

  • the artworks that first sparked James’s passion for art,

  • how historicism can resonate with contemporary audiences,

  • the role of mysticism and relics in art today,

  • and what it means to curate in dialogue with architecture, history, and ritual.
